Seriously comfortable accommodation

The Camp

Stretching along the southerly bank of the Luangwa River, Flatdogs is a famously welcoming camp with a vibrant safari atmosphere.

The luxury en-suite safari tents each have a view of the river and large windows, so that game viewing can continue inside! Each tent has a king or twin beds, large mosquito net, seating area, tea and coffee making facilities and a safe. En-suites have flush toilets, hot showers and basin, and are decorated with beautiful natural materials.

The Flatdogs pool is an oasis of cool, crystal clear water set beneath shady trees, and a swim during the heat of the day is an absolute must. The casual seating that surrounds the pool extends down onto the river bank, where you can spend a few happy hours spotting game on the opposite bank or getting acquainted with a really good book.

The Flatdogs bar is only a stone’s throw away when it’s time for refreshment.

Meals at Flatdogs are a treat in themselves. The a la carte restaurant has a delicious and varied menu, while the specials board offers something different every day. Vegetarians are very happily catered for, as are lactose, gluten and wheat intolerances, mushroom haters, tomato sceptics: you name it, the Flatdogs kitchen can cater for it!

You can choose to eat inside the restaurant or in the atmospheric courtyard shaded by an ancient sausage tree. A small shop and internet café adjoin the courtyard and WiFi is also available for a small fee.

Day 4

After your morning activity at Flatdogs Camp and a bite to eat, a transfer vehicle will be waiting to drive you to Nkonzi Camp.

The transfer takes approximately 1 hour, depending what there is to see along the way.

Nights 4,5,6,7  | Nkonzi Bush Camp

 Highlights

Sheer tranquillity with almost no trappings of the modern world

The opportunity to explore remote areas of the South Luangwa National Park that few visitors ever reach

Expert, personal guiding by owner and safari guide Gavin Opie

Breakfasts cooked over the open camp fire

See the breath taking Milky Way with zero light pollution!

The Camp

Nkonzi Bush Camp is small and evocative, with a vintage bush camp atmosphere. The camp has just two double and two twin tents, with a maximum of eight guests at any one time.

The canvas safari tents are simple, but with all the comforts you need. Wooden framed beds, white cotton bed linens, fluffy towels and a small seating area are all provided. Each tent also has a en-suite bathroom attached with flush toilet, basin and hot water bucket shower.

A grove of soaring African Mahogany trees shades the main seating and dining area. Here you’ll find a charming bush lounge where you can while away a few hours exchanging stories with Gavin and your fellow guests. The small bar serves cold drinks and special safari cocktails, like the vibrant Red Mamba. Closer to the riverbank is the camp fire, a hub of activity and socialising during the hush of early morning and chill of the African evening.

Delicious home cooked meals are prepared in the Nkonzi Camp bush kitchen and the chefs are proud to use locally sourced, fresh ingredients to create their popular menu, A typical day in camp begins with a light breakfast, followed by brunch after your first activity, then afternoon tea and finally a two course dinner with freshly baked bread. Dietary intolerances are happily catered for, as are special occasions.

Meals are eaten together at the long, convivial dining table. At night you can drink in the sight of the stunning Milky Way emblazoned across the night sky from horizon to horizon; stargazing while you’re eating dinner is an experience never to be forgotten.

Activities

Morning and afternoon/night game drives are led by experienced and highly trained safari guides. Morning drives leave camp at around 06:00 and head into the national park in the glorious morning light; perfect for photography. Your guide will reveal the secrets of the wildlife and landscape as you go, and your chances of sighting Africa’s iconic species like elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo are best at this time when the animals are most active. You return to camp at around 10:00 for brunch and the restful midday hours.

Afternoon/night drives leave camp at around 16:00 following afternoon tea. This is a magical time to be in the park, as the sun begins to sink and the sense of anticipation grows. After enjoying a cold drink while watching the sun set, your guide will switch on the spotlight, and game viewing continues in the dark. Now is the time to look for Africa’s great predators such as lion, leopard and hyena and other nocturnal creatures like civet, genet and rare species of owl. The drive ends at 20:00 as your arrive back in camp to relive your experiences over dinner.

Walking safaris offer an unparalleled chance to immerse yourself in the safari experience. Your guide will use his years of experience to great effect as you track game on foot. Discovering the small things such as animal spoor, insects and birdlife is all part of the charm of the Luangwa’s famous walking safaris, while the experience of walking through big game country with an armed escort scout is something you’ll never forget.

Flatdogs also offer village tours which can include visits to schools, the local market, and the Mfuwe conservation base, as well as the nearby Project Luangwa craft workshop.
